VAT in Ireland
VAT in Ireland: what you need to know
The rules the product is set up around, in plain words. Your accountant confirms what applies to you. Sources: Revenue: current VAT rates, Revenue: VAT thresholds, Revenue: when VAT is payable, Revenue: VAT modernisation.
- Registration. You must register for VAT once your turnover passes €42,500 a year for services or €85,000 for goods (since 1 January 2025). Below that, registering is voluntary.
- Rates. 23% standard; 13.5% reduced, for example on building work and hotel stays; 9% on newspapers, sports facilities, gas and electricity, and since 1 July 2026 on restaurant and catering food and hairdressing. Some goods, such as most food and exports, are zero-rated.
- Returns. VAT3 returns cover two months and are due by the 19th of the following month, or the 23rd when you file and pay on ROS, with an annual Return of Trading Details.
- Invoices. A VAT invoice to a business shows your name, address and VAT number, the customer's name and address, a sequential number, the date, a description, the price before VAT, the rate and the VAT at each rate.
- E-invoicing. Revenue's roadmap starts e-invoicing and real-time reporting between Irish businesses with large companies on 1 November 2028, with others following. Nothing changes for small businesses yet.
- Reverse charge. For services bought from a business abroad you account for the VAT yourself. SimpleERP self-assesses it on bills from suppliers in other countries.

FAQ
Questions, answered
Do I need to be registered for VAT to use SimpleERP?
No. Setup asks whether you are registered. You must register for VAT once your turnover passes €42,500 a year for services or €85,000 for goods. Below that, registering is voluntary. If that changes, switch it in Settings; your VAT number prints on every invoice once you add it.
What does a SimpleERP vat invoice show?
Your business name and address, your VAT number, the customer, a number from a sequence that never repeats, the date, each line with its VAT rate, the tax by rate and the amount in words. Your accountant can confirm what your business must show.
How much does SimpleERP cost in Ireland?
Every module is free for 7 days with no card. After that Premium is €45 per user per month (€540 per user per year), the fixed equivalent of USD 50, counted on the people who sign in. See pricing.
Does SimpleERP file my VAT returns?
No. It keeps the records and gives you a tax summary by rate and the sales and purchase registers, all exportable to CSV, for whoever files your returns.
Does SimpleERP send payroll or VAT returns to ROS?
No. SimpleERP keeps the invoices, bills and payslips and gives you the VAT summary by rate and the sales and purchase registers. You or your accountant file the VAT3 and the payroll submissions on ROS from those figures.
Which VAT rate do restaurants and cafés use now?
Since 1 July 2026, food from restaurants and catering is at 9% while alcohol, soft drinks and bottled water stay at 23%. SimpleERP seeds both rates; set each product's rate once and invoices pick it up. Check the Revenue guidance for mixed sales.
Where is my data stored?
In a PostgreSQL database on the hosted service, where row-level security keeps each business to its own rows. Ask us where the service is hosted and how it is backed up, and export your reports to CSV whenever you like.
