VAT in Nigeria
VAT in Nigeria: what you need to know
The rules the product is set up around, in plain words. Your accountant confirms what applies to you. Sources: Nigeria Revenue Service, NRS: Merchant Buyer Solution (e-invoicing), PenCom: Pension Reform Act 2014.
- New law. Since 1 January 2026 VAT is charged under the Nigeria Tax Act 2025 and collected by the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS), which replaced FIRS.
- Rate. 7.5% on taxable supplies. Some basic items are zero-rated or exempt under the Act.
- Small businesses. Businesses below the VAT threshold in the Nigeria Tax Act 2025 do not charge VAT and can register voluntarily. Your accountant confirms whether you qualify.
- Tax ID. Your National Identification Number (NIN) is your Tax ID as an individual; a company uses the Tax ID linked to its CAC registration.
- E-invoicing. NRS is rolling out e-invoicing through its Merchant Buyer Solution by taxpayer size, starting with large taxpayers. Smaller businesses follow in later phases.

What does a SimpleERP tax invoice show?
Your business name and address, your Tax ID, the customer, a number from a sequence that never repeats, the date, each line with its VAT rate, the tax by rate and the amount in words. Your accountant can confirm what your business must show.

My business is small. Do I have to charge VAT?
Not if your business is below the VAT threshold in the Nigeria Tax Act 2025 and you have not registered voluntarily. Answer No to "VAT registered?" at setup and use the Exempt rate on products, so invoices carry no VAT. Your accountant confirms whether the threshold covers you.
