GST in New Zealand
GST in New Zealand: what you need to know
The rules the product is set up around, in plain words. Your accountant confirms what applies to you. Sources: Inland Revenue: taxable supply information, business.govt.nz: GST, Inland Revenue: KiwiSaver changes, Inland Revenue: ACC earners' levy rates.
- Registration. You must register for GST once your turnover reaches $60,000 in 12 months, or is likely to. Below that, registering is voluntary.
- Rate. 15% on most goods and services. Exports are zero-rated; residential rent and financial services are exempt.
- Taxable supply information. Since 1 April 2023 there is no required "tax invoice" document. Over $200, show your name, GST number, the date, a description and the GST; over $1,000 also the buyer's name and an address, phone, email or NZBN.
- Returns. Monthly, two-monthly or six-monthly. Six-monthly is only open while your turnover stays under $500,000 a year.
- Requests. A GST-registered customer can ask for the information on any sale over $200, and you have 28 days to give it.

FAQ
Questions, answered
Do I need to be registered for GST to use SimpleERP?
No. Setup asks whether you are registered. You must register for GST once your turnover reaches $60,000 in 12 months. Below that, registering is voluntary. If that changes, switch it in Settings; your GST number prints on every invoice once you add it.
What does a SimpleERP tax invoice show?
Your business name and address, your GST number, the customer, a number from a sequence that never repeats, the date, each line with its GST rate, the tax by rate and the amount in words. Your accountant can confirm what your business must show.
How much does SimpleERP cost in New Zealand?
Every module is free for 7 days with no card. After that Premium is NZ$85 per user per month (NZ$1,020 per user per year), the fixed equivalent of USD 50, counted on the people who sign in. See pricing.
Does SimpleERP file my GST returns?
No. It keeps the records and gives you a tax summary by rate and the sales and purchase registers, all exportable to CSV, for whoever files your returns.
Does SimpleERP do payday filing with Inland Revenue?
No. SimpleERP builds payslips and posts PAYE, KiwiSaver and student loan amounts to the payables you remit, but you file the employment information with Inland Revenue yourself or through your payroll provider.
My invoices still say Tax Invoice. Is that wrong?
No. The title is no longer required since April 2023, but it does no harm. What matters is the information: your GST number and the GST on sales over $200, and the buyer's details over $1,000. SimpleERP prints all of it.
Where is my data stored?
In a PostgreSQL database on the hosted service, where row-level security keeps each business to its own rows. Ask us where the service is hosted and how it is backed up, and export your reports to CSV whenever you like.
