SST in Malaysia
SST in Malaysia: what you need to know
The rules the product is set up around, in plain words. Your accountant confirms what applies to you. Sources: MOF: sales tax revision and service tax scope, 1 July 2025, RMCD MySST, LHDN: e-Invoice, KWSP (EPF).
- Two taxes, not a VAT. Sales tax is charged by manufacturers of taxable goods at 10%, or 5% for selected goods. Service tax is charged by providers of taxable services at 8%, or 6% for selected services. SST you pay on purchases is a cost, not a credit, and SimpleERP books it that way.
- Registration. Sales tax registration is for manufacturers of taxable goods, once taxable turnover passes RM500,000 in 12 months. For service tax the threshold is RM500,000 for most taxable services, RM1 million for rental, leasing and financial services, and RM1.5 million for food and beverage and construction. Voluntary registration is allowed below the threshold; MySST lists the full schedule.
- Wider scope since 1 July 2025. Sales tax now covers more goods, and service tax was extended to leasing and rental, construction, financial services, private healthcare, education and beauty services, with exemptions for some of them.
- Returns. The SST-02 return covers two months and is due by the end of the following month.
- e-Invoicing. LHDN's MyInvois e-invoice is phased in by turnover. Businesses below RM1 million a year are exempt, and those up to RM5 million have been given more time.

FAQ
Questions, answered
Do I need to be registered for SST to use SimpleERP?
No. Setup asks whether you are registered. Register once taxable turnover passes RM500,000 in 12 months for manufacturers of taxable goods and most taxable services, RM1 million for rental, leasing and financial services, and RM1.5 million for food and beverage and construction. Voluntary registration is allowed below that. If that changes, switch it in Settings; your SST number prints on every invoice once you add it.
What does a SimpleERP invoice show?
Your business name and address, your SST number, the customer, a number from a sequence that never repeats, the date, each line with its SST rate, the tax by rate and the amount in words. Your accountant can confirm what your business must show.
How much does SimpleERP cost in Malaysia?
Every module is free for 7 days with no card. After that Premium is RM 200 per user per month (RM 2,400 per user per year), the fixed equivalent of USD 50, counted on the people who sign in. See pricing.
Does SimpleERP file my SST returns?
No. It keeps the records and gives you a tax summary by rate and the sales and purchase registers, all exportable to CSV, for whoever files your returns.
Why does SimpleERP treat SST on my purchases as a cost?
Because SST is a single-stage tax: unlike GST before 2018, you cannot claim back the SST you pay on purchases. SimpleERP adds it to the cost of what you buy instead of a tax receivable.
Does SimpleERP submit e-invoices to MyInvois?
No. SimpleERP keeps your invoices and exports them, but it does not validate or submit e-invoices to LHDN. If MyInvois applies to your turnover, use the MyInvois portal or an approved solution alongside it.
Where is my data stored?
In a PostgreSQL database on the hosted service, where row-level security keeps each business to its own rows. Ask us where the service is hosted and how it is backed up, and export your reports to CSV whenever you like.
