VAT in the UAE

VAT in the UAE: what you need to know

The rules the product is set up around, in plain words. Your accountant confirms what applies to you. Sources: FTA: VAT, Ministry of Finance: e-invoicing, MOHRE: Federal Decree-Law No. 33 of 2021.

  • Registration. VAT registration with the Federal Tax Authority is mandatory once taxable supplies and imports pass AED 375,000 in 12 months, or are expected to in the next 30 days. You may register voluntarily from AED 187,500.
  • Rates. 5% standard. Exports, international transport and some education and healthcare are zero-rated; residential rent after first supply, local passenger transport and some financial services are exempt.
  • Tax invoices. A tax invoice says "Tax Invoice" and shows your TRN, the customer's TRN where they are registered, a sequential number, the date, each line's amount and VAT, and the total in AED. A simplified tax invoice is allowed for sales to consumers and for sales under AED 10,000.
  • Returns. Returns are filed on EmaraTax for the tax period the FTA gives you, usually quarterly, and are due by the 28th day after the period ends.
  • Reverse charge. Services bought from abroad are reverse-charged: you account for the VAT and recover it as input tax in the same return.
  • E-invoicing. The UAE's national e-invoicing system starts in phases: businesses with revenue of AED 50 million or more from 1 January 2027, everyone else from 1 July 2027, through an accredited service provider.

FAQ

Questions, answered

Do I need to be registered for VAT to use SimpleERP?

No. Setup asks whether you are registered. VAT registration is mandatory above AED 375,000 of taxable supplies a year and voluntary from AED 187,500. If that changes, switch it in Settings; your TRN prints on every invoice once you add it.

What does a SimpleERP tax invoice show?

Your business name and address, your TRN, the customer, a number from a sequence that never repeats, the date, each line with its VAT rate, the tax by rate and the amount in words. Your accountant can confirm what your business must show.

How much does SimpleERP cost in the UAE?

Every module is free for 7 days with no card. After that Premium is AED 185 per user per month (AED 2,220 per user per year), the fixed equivalent of USD 50, counted on the people who sign in. See pricing.

Does SimpleERP file my VAT returns?

No. It keeps the records and gives you a tax summary by rate and the sales and purchase registers, all exportable to CSV, for whoever files your returns.

Will SimpleERP send e-invoices when the UAE mandate starts?

Not today. SimpleERP is not an accredited service provider and does not send invoices to the national e-invoicing network. Businesses with revenue of AED 50 million or more need one from 1 January 2027, and the rest from 1 July 2027.

Can I use SimpleERP before I am VAT registered?

Yes. Answer No to "VAT registered?" at setup and your invoices print as plain invoices with no VAT. Once the FTA issues your TRN, add it in Settings and invoices print as Tax Invoices from then on.

Where is my data stored?

In a PostgreSQL database on the hosted service, where row-level security keeps each business to its own rows. Ask us where the service is hosted and how it is backed up, and export your reports to CSV whenever you like.
