Manufacturing software for rice mills
Record each milling run as a work order, so the paddy really used sets the cost of every kilo of rice that reaches the godown.
In short
SimpleERP is manufacturing software for rice mills in India. A bill of materials plans paddy per batch, a work order records each milling run with actual consumption, and rice enters the godown at the real cost per kilo.

A manufacturing day at Ponni Valley Rice Mill
On a milling day at Ponni Valley Rice Mill the huller takes in about 12,000 kg of parboiled paddy. Roughly two thirds comes out as rice, with broken rice, bran and husk making up the rest, and the split shifts with the variety and how well the paddy was dried.
The owner wants one number from each run: what a kilo of rice really cost. That means the paddy at its purchase cost, plus power and labour for the day, divided by what came out of the polisher, not by what the yield was supposed to be.
SimpleERP records each run as a work order. The bill of materials plans the paddy, the work order consumes what was really used, and the rice enters the godown at the actual cost per kilo when the run is completed.
What does a bill of materials for rice look like?
A BOM lists the paddy needed for one batch, a scrap percentage for what is lost in the mill, and the power and labour per batch. SimpleERP prices the paddy at its current average cost and shows the standard cost per kilo of rice as you type.
- One BOM per rice product, with raw and boiled rice kept apart.
- A BOM never includes the product it makes.
- Paddy without a cost yet is flagged as an estimate.
| BOM line | Per 1,000 kg of boiled rice | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Paddy, parboiled and dried | 1,500 kg @ ₹25 | ₹37,500 |
| Scrap allowance | 2% | ₹750 |
| Power and labour per batch | per 1,000 kg | ₹1,400 |
| Standard cost | ₹39.65 per kg | ₹39,650 |
How does a milling run become a work order?
Plan the run for the rice you expect to make, and SimpleERP freezes the paddy needed and flags a shortage in the drying godown. Start it when the huller starts, then complete it with the rice actually bagged and the paddy actually used.
- Shortage flagged with a button to create a purchase order.
- Start and complete from a phone on the mill floor.
- Planned against actual paddy cost kept on the work order.
- Link a run to a sales order when a trader has booked the rice.
What happens to bran, broken rice and husk?
A work order makes one output, so rice is the output and the rest goes into stock through an adjustment with the reason Other and a note naming the run. Value the by-products at a realistic rate and they are ready to bill the same evening.
- Broken rice added in quintals at its own value.
- Bran in kilos for the feed dealer.
- Husk in tonnes for the boiler or a kiln buyer.

Why did this run cost more than last week's?
Each completed work order keeps planned and actual paddy side by side. When a damp lot gives 62% instead of 66%, the higher paddy consumption shows on that run, and its rice carries the higher cost into the average.
- Consumption defaults to the plan scaled to what was made, and each line can be corrected.
- Filter work orders by product, godown, status and dates.
- Overhead absorbed posts to the ledger with the run.

Where manufacturing connects
A completed work order takes paddy out of stock, puts rice in at actual cost and posts the journal in the same step.

Honest limits
What SimpleERP does not do yet
- No production stages or shop-floor tracking; a work order is planned, started and completed
- No piece-rate pay or scrap by-product in the work order
- Work orders are internal; job work sent outside is a purchase, not a work order
- No by-product yield split in a single work order: bran, broken rice and husk go in by adjustment.
- No soaking, drying or parboiling stage on the work order.

FAQ
Questions, answered
Can one work order give me rice, bran and husk together?
No. A work order has one output product. Make rice the output, then post a stock adjustment for bran, broken rice and husk with the reason Other and the run in the note. Rice carries the full paddy cost, and the by-products add their own value to stock.
Parboiling takes two days. Is that a separate stage?
There are no production stages. Most mills plan the work order when soaking begins, start it when the paddy goes to the huller and complete it when the rice is bagged. If you sell parboiled paddy itself, make it a product with its own work order.
How is power for the huller charged to the rice?
Put power and labour per batch on the BOM. When the work order completes, that amount is added to the rice cost and posted as overhead absorbed. The actual EB bill is still recorded as a supplier bill or expense, so the two can be compared over a month.
Can I mill a customer's paddy on job work?
Not as a work order, which is for your own stock. When you mill someone else's paddy for a fee, bill the milling charge as a service line on an invoice and keep their paddy and rice out of your stock.
