Plastics and packaging

Accounting software for the packaging industry

A moulding unit's margin hides in three places: the polymer rate, the power bill and the buyer who pays late. Keep all three in one ledger that writes itself as you work.

In short

SimpleERP is accounting software for plastics and packaging makers in India. Buyer invoices, polymer distributor bills, power and mould costs, payroll and depreciation post their own journals to one ledger, ready for a trial balance and P&L on any date.

An accounting day at Sabarmati Polymers

The power bill at Sabarmati Polymers is the second biggest cost after polymer, because the blow moulding and injection moulding machines run two shifts. The owner also pays a tool room in Odhav for every new mould, and some of those moulds are paid for by the buyer whose container they make.

The part-time accountant closes the books once a month. She needs the polymer distributor's balance, the oil packers' dues, the GST input on granules and the mould register to agree, and she needs that without retyping the dispatch book.

Which ledger accounts carry a moulding unit's month?

The chart of accounts is seeded at sign-up. These are the accounts the accountant at Sabarmati Polymers reviews, and the check she runs on each before locking the month.

  • Moulds are fixed assets with depreciation, not an expense in the month they arrive.
  • The power bill is a supplier bill to an expense account, so the cost sits in the right month.
  • GST input on polymer bills lands in its own account per tax.

Can a manual entry throw the books out?

No. The journal editor shows the difference between debits and credits and will not post until it is zero, and the database refuses an unbalanced entry from anywhere. Stock accounts are left to stock documents, so the inventory figure and the ledger never drift apart.

  • Manual journals only for what no document covers, such as a machine loan EMI split into interest and principal.
  • Reversals with a new entry, never a deletion.
  • Every change carries who made it and when.

How does the month close?

Reconcile the bank by ticking the lines that cleared, check the trial balance, then set the lock date. A correction to a closed month's bill goes into the open month as a credit or debit note.

  • Profit and loss with gross profit, so a month of high polymer prices shows in the margin.
  • Balance sheet that agrees with the P&L to the paisa.
  • Every report prints on A4 or exports to CSV for your CA.

Honest limits

What SimpleERP does not do yet

  • No bank feeds: bank entries are recorded and reconciled by hand
  • No multi-currency; every document is in rupees
  • GST return filing and e-invoicing are not done inside the product
  • No machine-hour or power cost split per product; power is one expense, and a share can go into the labour and power line of each BOM

FAQ

Questions, answered

A buyer paid half the cost of a new mould. How do I record it?

Bill the buyer's share as a mould development charge on an invoice. Record the tool room's full bill for the mould and add the mould to the asset register at the cost your CA advises. The buyer's share then shows as income and the mould depreciates on its own.

Can I see whether the oil packers or the namkeen buyers make me more money?

Sales reports by customer and product show what each buyer bought and at what price, and every invoice carries the cost of what it sold. Export the sales register to CSV and compare margins by buyer in a spreadsheet.

We get a large power bill on the 5th for the previous month. Which month does it go in?

Enter the supplier bill with the date your CA prefers, usually the last day of the month it covers, before you lock that month. The expense then sits in the month the machines used the power.

Can my accountant work from home?

Yes. Invite her with the Accountant role and she works in the browser from anywhere. She can post journals, reconcile the bank and run reports, and every change she makes is in the audit history.
