Amount in words converter for Indian rupees, in lakh and crore

Type an amount and copy it in words, the way an Indian invoice, receipt or cheque writes it: thousand, lakh and crore, then paise, ending in only.

In short

This free amount in words converter from SimpleERP writes any rupee amount in words using the Indian system of lakh and crore, with paise. It uses the same code that prints the total in words on SimpleERP invoices.

In words, as printed on an invoice
One lakh eighteen thousand rupees and fifty paise only

One lakh eighteen thousand rupees and fifty paise only

How to use it

One field, and the words update as you type.

  1. Type the amount

Digits only, with up to two decimals for paise, such as 1250000 or 118000.50. Commas are not needed.

  2. Copy the words

The result reads like an invoice total, such as "Twelve lakh fifty thousand rupees only".

  3. Paste it where you need it

On an invoice, a receipt, a cheque or a contract. Check it against the figure once before you sign.

How does the Indian system group digits?

After the first thousand, Indian numbering groups digits in twos, not threes. So 12,50,000 is twelve lakh fifty thousand, where the international system writes 1,250,000 as one million two hundred fifty thousand.

  • 1,000 is one thousand.
  • 1,00,000 is one lakh (a hundred thousand).
  • 1,00,00,000 is one crore (ten million, or a hundred lakh).
  • Above a crore the words repeat: 1,00,00,00,000 is one hundred crore.

Do GST invoices need the amount in words?

Rule 46 of the CGST Rules lists what a tax invoice must carry, and the total in words is not on that list, as notified; check the current rules. It is still standard practice, because words are harder to alter than figures and buyers' accounts teams expect it.

  • Cheques need the amount in words, and the bank compares it with the figure.
  • Receipts and contracts usually state it too, to settle any doubt about the figure.
  • Paise: write them as "and fifty paise", or round the total and show the round-off on the invoice.

The total in words prints under the invoice total.

Do this automatically in SimpleERP

Every SimpleERP invoice prints its grand total in words from the same converter, so the figure and the words always agree.

  • Lakh and crore on invoices and other printed documents.
  • Paise included when the total has them.
  • No retyping, so no mismatch between the figure and the words.

The maths

How it is calculated

The converter splits the rupees into Indian groups from the left, names each group, then adds the paise.

  • Crore = rupees ÷ 1,00,00,000 (whole part), written in words itself, so 150 crore works.
  • Lakh = what is left ÷ 1,00,000, from one to ninety-nine.
  • Thousand = what is left ÷ 1,000, from one to ninety-nine.
  • Hundreds and units = the last three digits.
  • Paise = the two decimals, rounded half up, written as "and … paise". The result ends in "only".

Honest limits

What this converter does not do

  • It writes Indian rupees only, not dollars or other currencies, and not the international million and billion system.
  • It drops a minus sign; a credit note says it is a credit elsewhere on the document.

FAQ

Questions, answered

How do you write 12,50,000 in words?

Twelve lakh fifty thousand rupees only. In the international system the same number is one million two hundred fifty thousand.

How many lakh make a crore?

One hundred. A crore is 1,00,00,000, which is a hundred lakh or ten million.

How do I write paise in words on a cheque?

Add them after the rupees, such as "One lakh eighteen thousand rupees and fifty paise only". Many businesses round cheques to whole rupees to avoid this.

Why does the amount in words end with only?

"Only" closes the amount so nothing can be added after it. It is a convention on Indian invoices, receipts and cheques.
