GST state code 29: Karnataka

Karnataka's GST state code is 29. Software from Bengaluru, silk from Mysuru and Ramanagara, and coffee from Chikkamagaluru are billed from GSTINs that start with 29.

In short

Karnataka has GST state code 29, so every GSTIN registered there begins with 29. A local sale carries CGST and SGST; a sale to Tamil Nadu carries IGST. SimpleERP reads 29 from the buyer's GSTIN and picks the tax.

What the code 29 means on a GSTIN

A GSTIN has 15 characters. Take the sample 29AAACL1234A1Z5, a made-up number with a valid check character. 29 is the state code for Karnataka. AAACL1234A is the PAN of the business, and 1 says this is the first registration under that PAN in Karnataka. Z is the same on almost every GSTIN, while 5 is a check character worked out from the first 14, so a single wrong digit in 29AAACL1234A1Z5 fails the check.

Karnataka borders six states: Goa, Maharashtra, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Kerala. A Bengaluru software firm billing a client in Chennai charges IGST because the client's GSTIN starts with 33. For a service to a registered client, the place of supply is usually the client's location.

Intra-state or inter-state: which tax applies when the supplier is in Karnataka?

When a Bengaluru software firm bills a retailer in Mysuru for a support contract, supplier and place of supply are both in Karnataka, so the invoice carries CGST and SGST. When the firm bills a manufacturer in Chennai, the place of supply moves to Tamil Nadu and the whole tax becomes IGST; the same holds when the firm bills a shipping office in Kavaratti, because Lakshadweep has its own code, 31.

Does professional tax apply in Karnataka?

Yes. Karnataka levies professional tax on salaries, as notified; check the current slabs with the Karnataka tax department before you deduct it, since this page lists no Karnataka slab amounts. In SimpleERP payroll, Professional Tax is a fixed deduction on the payslip that starts at zero, so you enter the Karnataka amount once.

How SimpleERP reads the state from a GSTIN

You never type 29 or Karnataka on an invoice: SimpleERP takes both from the customer's GSTIN and works out the rest.

  • The state fills from the first two characters of the GSTIN: type 29AAACL1234A1Z5 and SimpleERP shows Karnataka (29) under the field, after checking the last character.
  • The place of supply comes from the buyer's GSTIN, so a Tamil Nadu buyer fills Tamil Nadu (33); a buyer without a GSTIN gets the state picked once on the customer record.
  • Each invoice line compares the place of supply with your Karnataka branch and carries CGST and SGST, or IGST.

For a Karnataka branch, the billing editor picks CGST and SGST or IGST per line from the place of supply.

FAQ

Questions, answered

What is the GST state code for Karnataka?

Karnataka uses GST state code 29. Every GSTIN registered in Karnataka, from Bengaluru to Mangaluru and Hubballi, starts with 29. Code 28, just before it, is the code for Andhra Pradesh before 2014.

Is code 29 used for SGST or UTGST?

SGST. Karnataka is a state, so a sale within Karnataka carries CGST and SGST at half the rate each. A Mangaluru supplier shipping to Lakshadweep sells into a union territory that charges UTGST locally; that sale carries IGST.

Which code do I use for a customer in Karnataka?

Use the code in the client's GSTIN: 29 for Karnataka, 33 for Chennai, 32 for Kochi. For services to a registered client, the client's location is usually the place of supply. For goods to an unregistered buyer, use the state of delivery.

Does SimpleERP need me to pick Karnataka by hand?

No. SimpleERP fills the state from the client's GSTIN, so a Chennai client shows as Tamil Nadu (33) and your Bengaluru invoice carries IGST on each line. A Mysuru client keeps CGST and SGST. The state is chosen by hand only for clients without a GSTIN.
