Updated
In short
A receipt voucher records money received and the account it landed in; under GST it is also issued for advances. In SimpleERP a recorded customer payment is the receipt voucher and prints as a receipt.
A receipt voucher is the accounting record of money coming in: cash, cheque, UPI or bank transfer received, the account it landed in and who paid it. In Tally-style books it is the Receipt voucher type. Under GST, a receipt voucher is also the document a supplier issues when it receives an advance before supplying goods or services.
Receipt voucher: a worked example
On 2 Oct 2026 Ravi Stores sends ₹50,000 by NEFT as an advance on an order of office chairs. No invoice exists yet, so the payment is recorded on account and posts this entry:
| Account | Debit | Credit |
|---|---|---|
| Bank | ₹50,000 | |
| Ravi Stores (accounts receivable) | ₹50,000 |
Is a receipt voucher the same as a payment receipt?
They describe the same event from two sides. The receipt voucher is the seller's entry in the books; the payment receipt is the printed acknowledgement given to the payer. Under GST the term has a narrower meaning: the voucher a supplier issues for an advance, which must show the advance amount and the tax on it where tax is due.
FAQ
Questions, answered
What is the journal entry for a receipt voucher?
Debit the cash or bank account where the money landed and credit the account it came from: the customer's account for a sale, or another account such as a loan or capital for other receipts. Total debits and credits are equal, as in every entry.
Is a receipt voucher mandatory under GST?
When a registered supplier receives an advance before supplying, GST rules require a receipt voucher. For services, GST is payable on the advance; for most goods it is not, but the voucher is still issued. Check your case with your accountant.
Does SimpleERP calculate GST on advances?
No. An advance is recorded as a customer payment on account and prints as a receipt without tax. GST is calculated on the tax invoice when you raise it. A service business that takes advances should confirm the tax treatment with its accountant.
What is the difference between a receipt voucher and a payment voucher?
A receipt voucher records money coming in; a payment voucher records money going out, such as paying a supplier. In SimpleERP outgoing supplier payments print as payment vouchers numbered like PAY-2026-27-0009.
