In short

ERP, enterprise resource planning, is software that runs sales, stock, purchases, accounts and payroll on one shared set of records. SimpleERP is ERP software for Indian small businesses, simple by default and complete underneath.

ERP, enterprise resource planning, is software that runs a business's sales, stock, purchases, accounts, people and reports on one shared set of records. Each job is entered once and every module and report reads the same data. For a small business it replaces separate billing, stock, accounting and payroll tools that each keep their own copy of the truth.

ERP: a worked example

On 3 October 2026 Lakshmi Steel Furnitures in Coimbatore invoices Ravi Stores for 2 Steel rack 4 shelf at ₹4,990 each. The taxable value is ₹9,980, CGST 9% is ₹898.20 and SGST 9% is ₹898.20, so invoice INV-2026-27-0213 totals ₹11,776 after rounding. Here is what that one invoice changes.

One sale, five records: entered up to five times with separate tools, once with an ERP.

What does an ERP replace in a small business?

Usually four or five tools that each keep their own copy: a billing app, a stock register or spreadsheet, accounting software such as Tally, a payroll sheet and a notebook of follow-ups. The work moves into one system, and the month-end job of making those copies agree disappears, because there is only one copy.

When does a small business need an ERP?

When the same sale is typed twice. Typical signs: stock in the books never matches the godown, the accountant re-keys invoices into accounting every month, nobody can say what a customer owes without phoning someone, and GST figures are rebuilt from sales and purchase registers before every return. At that point one system costs less than the re-entry.

FAQ

Questions, answered

What is the full form of ERP?

ERP stands for enterprise resource planning. The name dates from 1990s software for large manufacturers; in practice today it means one system for sales, stock, purchases, accounts and people, sharing one database instead of syncing copies between separate tools.

Is ERP only for large companies?

ERP is not only for large companies. A small business with GST billing, a godown and a few staff has the same need for one set of records. The difference is that small-business ERP has to be quick to set up, priced for a small team and simple to use day to day.

How is ERP different from accounting software like Tally?

Accounting software records the books. ERP also runs the work that creates those entries, such as quotes, orders, stock, purchases and payroll, so the journal is posted from the invoice instead of typed again. With an ERP the books and the godown come from the same entries.

How long does it take to start using an ERP?

Large ERP projects take months. SimpleERP signs up with a name, phone number and password, sets up the chart of accounts, GST rates and numbering itself, and a business can raise its first GST invoice within ten minutes. Products can be imported by CSV; customers and suppliers are added on screen.
