Tally vs Busy: which fits a small business in India?

Tally and Busy are both desktop accounting software with inventory, built in India and used by many traders, distributors and manufacturers. The differences are in habits, editions and who supports you.

In short

Tally and Busy are both desktop accounting and inventory tools; the choice often comes down to which one your accountant and local partner know. SimpleERP fits teams that want the same books and stock in a browser.

What each is good at

Both have served Indian small businesses for decades, and both put accounts and stock in one desktop product.

  • Tally: accountants know it. It is one of the tools most Indian CAs learnt on.
  • Tally: a large partner network. Help, add-ons and training are easy to find.
  • Busy: inventory depth for traders. Its editions cover detailed stock and billing needs for trading and distribution.
  • Busy: editions by business size. You can start small and move to a fuller edition later.

Which suits a stock-heavy trader or distributor?

Both handle stock alongside accounts. Busy is often chosen by traders and distributors for its inventory and billing options by edition. Tally is often chosen because the accountant already uses it. Make a list of the stock reports you check every week and ask a partner for each to show them on your own data.

Which is easier to get help with?

Tally has a very large network of partners and trained accountants, so help is rarely far away. Busy has its own partner network as well. If you rely on a local partner for setup and fixes, ask who is near you before you choose.

Verdict

Choose Tally if… choose Busy if…

Both are sensible choices for different businesses. Here is the honest split.

Choose Tally if

  • Your accountant and your local partner already work in Tally
  • Accounting and GST are the main job, with stock alongside
  • You want the widest choice of trained people to hire or call

Choose Busy if

  • You are a trader or distributor and want the inventory options of a fuller edition
  • A Busy partner near you can set it up and support it
  • You want to start on a smaller edition and move up as you grow

FAQ

Questions, answered

Is Tally or Busy better for a small manufacturer?

Both keep stock next to accounting on the desktop, and manufacturing features depend on the edition. Ask a partner of each to show a bill of materials and a production entry on your own products before you decide.

Do CAs prefer Tally or Busy?

Many Indian CAs learnt on Tally, so it is the more familiar of the two for most accountants. Plenty of CAs work with Busy too. Ask yours which they are faster in, since they will spend the most time in it.

Are Tally and Busy both desktop software?

Yes, both are installed on a computer. Working away from the office depends on the release, add-ons and remote access you set up, so check each vendor's current options.

Can I switch from Tally to Busy or to SimpleERP?

Yes, either way. Moving between two desktop tools is usually done at the start of a financial year, from opening balances and a product list. SimpleERP has no direct import of another system's data file: you import products and opening stock by CSV, add customers and suppliers on screen, and enter what is owed with the opening balances wizard, usually at the start of a month.
