SimpleERP vs ERPNext: an ERPNext alternative for small business
ERPNext is an open-source ERP built on the Frappe framework, broad and highly customisable. SimpleERP is a smaller ERP made for Indian small businesses, ready to bill in minutes. Here is how to choose.
In short
SimpleERP is a simple ERP for Indian small businesses, set up with GST, accounts, roles and numbering in minutes, with nothing to host. ERPNext suits businesses that want a broad, customisable open-source ERP and have hosting or a partner to run it.

What ERPNext is good at
ERPNext is an open-source ERP from Frappe, built on its own Frappe framework. It covers a very wide range of business jobs and can be customised deeply, which suits companies with unusual processes and the people to shape the system around them.
- Open source. The code is open, so you can host it yourself and are not tied to one vendor.
- Broad coverage. Accounting, stock, buying, selling, manufacturing and projects in one system.
- Deep customisation. Custom fields, forms, reports and scripts let a developer fit it to your processes.
- A community and partners. Implementation partners and an active community help with setup and support.
Side by side
Where the fit breaks: the jobs, side by side
The same daily jobs, described as work rather than features. The ERPNext column says how businesses on ERPNext usually get each job done, which depends on the edition, add-ons and setup you choose.
| Job | In SimpleERP | Typical with ERPNext |
|---|---|---|
| Get to the first GST invoice | Sign up, enter the business name and GSTIN, bill; GST rates, accounts and numbering are seeded | Usually a setup project: hosting, the Indian localisation and configuration |
| Hosting and upkeep | Nothing to host; the same product for every business, updated for you | Self-hosted on your own server, or hosted and maintained by Frappe or a partner |
| Know which screens to use | One product, simple by default; branches and the chart of accounts appear when you need them | Depends on the modules you enable and how they are configured |
| Keep the books correct | The database refuses unbalanced journals, edits to posted documents and posting before the lock date | Double entry, submitted documents that are cancelled and amended rather than edited, and a frozen-till date for closed periods |
| Team access | A login for every member with seven system roles plus custom roles, priced per user | Depends on hosting and how roles and permissions are set up |
| Work from a phone | Every screen works at 360 px in the browser, with nothing to install | In the browser, depending on the screens and customisations you use |
| Payroll with PF, PT and TDS | Attendance and leave feed payslips with PF, PT and TDS, posted to the same ledger | Usually through Frappe's separate HR app, set up for Indian rules by you or a partner |
| Custom workflows and fields | A fixed set of 13 modules on one ledger; no custom app builder | A natural fit: customisation is a core strength |
| E-invoice, e-way bill and GST filing | Registers and HSN summary export; no IRN, e-way bill or filing | E-invoice, e-way bill and GSTR-1 through the open-source India Compliance app |
| Get your data out | CSV export of every report, products, stock and the ledger; invoices print as A4 or PDF | A natural fit: open source and self-hostable, with report exports |
Verdict
Choose ERPNext if… choose SimpleERP if…
Both are sensible choices for different businesses. Here is the honest split.
Choose ERPNext if
- You want open source and the option to host the system yourself
- Your processes are unusual and you have a developer or partner to configure and extend it
- You need modules beyond the 13 SimpleERP covers, all inside one ERP
Choose SimpleERP if
- You are a 5 to 50 person business and want to bill on the first day, not after a project
- You want Indian GST, the April to March year and PF, PT and TDS built in from the start
- You want a system the database keeps correct, with nothing to host or maintain

Honest limits
What SimpleERP does not do yet
Worth knowing before you switch.
- GST return filing: registers and the HSN summary export to CSV for whoever files your returns
- E-invoice IRN and e-way bill generation through the government APIs
- Batch, lot, serial or expiry tracking, and multi-currency
- Bank feeds: bank entries are recorded and reconciled by hand
- Historical vouchers are not imported; the old system stays your archive
Getting started
Moving from ERPNext to SimpleERP
Pick a cut-over date
Keep your ERPNext site available for reference, and start SimpleERP from opening balances on a chosen date. Pick the first day of a financial year, quarter or month; 1 April is best.
Import your masters
Tally Masters XML, Zoho exports or spreadsheets, checked before anything is written: accounts, customers, suppliers and products with opening stock per warehouse. See the help centre.
Bring balances and open bills
Import opening balances for bank, cash, loans and the rest, and each unpaid invoice and bill with its own number and due date. A wrong import can be undone.
Run both for a month
Bill in SimpleERP and keep the old books open. Compare receivables, stock and the trial balance at month end, then set the lock date.
FAQ
Questions, answered
Is SimpleERP a simpler ERPNext alternative?
Yes, by design. SimpleERP covers 13 modules for small businesses on one ledger, with GST, accounts, roles and numbering seeded at sign-up, so the first invoice is minutes away. ERPNext offers more breadth and customisation, which suits businesses with hosting and a partner or developer.
Do I need a server or a partner to run SimpleERP?
No. SimpleERP runs in the browser with nothing to install, host or upgrade. Signing up takes your name, a +91 phone number and a password, and the business setup is one screen. Moving full history takes longer, so plan a month of parallel running.
Can SimpleERP be customised like ERPNext?
Only through settings. You can create custom roles from the system ones and set numbering, GST rates, branches, warehouses and payment terms, but there are no custom fields, scripts or app builder. That is a deliberate trade: every business runs the same product, which keeps it simple and correct.
Does SimpleERP file GST returns?
No. SimpleERP prepares what filing needs: the sales and purchase registers for GSTR-1 and GSTR-2B checks and the HSN summary, all exportable to CSV. Filing itself stays with you or your accountant on the GST portal. E-invoice IRNs and e-way bills are not generated through the government APIs today.
