A day in an electrical goods business

An electrical counter sells hundreds of small items a day, mostly on credit, to people who come back tomorrow.

By ten the counter is full. An electrician from a housing site wants four coils of 2.5 sq mm wire, forty modular switches and a box of LED battens on credit. A walk-in customer wants one ceiling fan and a GST bill.

In the workshop behind the shop, two technicians are wiring distribution boards for Ganesh Constructions, using MCBs, enclosures and busbars from the same stock the counter sells. Nobody writes down what they took. By the time the brand's distributor calls for an order, the stock register and the shelf disagree, and the electrician ledger is a notebook with loose pages.

SimpleERP puts the counter, the godown and the workshop on one stock ledger. The tax invoice issues each item from the godown it left and adds it to the buyer's dues, and the work order takes the MCBs and enclosures out of stock when a panel is finished, so the shelf, the books and the electrician's balance agree.

Reorder from the brand before the shelf runs dry

Every product carries a reorder level, and the low-stock list shows what has fallen to or below it in each godown, ready to turn into purchase orders to your brands and distributors.

  • Stock by godown for the shop, the back store and the workshop, valued at weighted average cost.
  • One click turns low-stock rows into purchase orders, grouped by supplier.
  • Supplier bills receive goods at the bill cost, so the average moves with the distributor's rate.

Manufacturing

Assemble panels and fixtures from the stock you sell

A bill of materials says what goes into one distribution board or LED fixture, and a work order takes those parts out of stock and puts the finished panel in at its actual cost.

  • BOM per assembly with the parts, labour and overhead, rolled up into a unit cost.
  • Work order from a sales order line, so a contractor's order for ten panels starts the job.

Receivables

Know which electrician owes what, and since when

Each electrician and contractor is a customer with payment terms and a credit limit, and the receivables ageing shows their dues in buckets from current to more than 90 days.

  • Credit limit warning when a new invoice would take the customer past the limit.
  • Customer statement with opening balance, every invoice and receipt, and an ageing summary.
  • Receipts settle one or several invoices, and part payments stay visible.

Honest limits

What SimpleERP does not do for electrical businesses yet

Check these against how you sell before you move the counter over.

  • Serial numbers or warranty tracking per unit. Stock is tracked by product and godown, so record serials in the line description if a buyer needs them on the bill.
  • Price lists per customer type. Set one sale price per product and give electricians and contractors their rate as a line discount.
  • Barcode scanner hardware. Products are picked by typing the name or SKU.
  • Batch or lot tracking for cables and lamps.
  • E-invoice (IRN) or e-way bill generation through the government APIs.

Getting started

Start with your first invoice

  1. Sign up with your phone

    Name, phone number and a password. No card for the seven-day trial, and email is optional.

  2. Tell us about the business

    Type your GSTIN and the state fills itself. Accounts, GST rates, units, roles and numbering are seeded for you.

  3. Add what you sell

    Import wires, switches, fittings and lights from a CSV file with HSN, GST rate, reorder level and opening stock per godown, or add them one by one.

  4. Post your first GST invoice

    Pick the customer, add lines and save. Your first GST invoice can be out within 10 minutes of signing up.

FAQ

Questions, answered

Which GST rate applies to electrical goods?

It follows the HSN code of each product, so one bill can carry several rates. Examples to check are 8544 for insulated wires and cables, 8536 for switches, sockets and MCBs, and 9405 for LED fixtures. In SimpleERP you set the HSN and rate on each product and the invoice applies them line by line. Rates change, so confirm the rate for your goods with your CA or the GST portal before you rely on it.

Can I keep a different price for electricians and contractors?

Not as a price list. Each product has one sale price, and you give an electrician or contractor their rate as a percent or amount discount on the line. The discount prints on the invoice and the GST is worked out on the discounted value.

Can I track serial numbers or warranty on fans and inverters?

No. SimpleERP tracks stock by product and godown, not by individual unit. If a buyer needs a serial number on the bill, type it into the line description. If you sell mostly serialised goods with warranty claims, SimpleERP is not the right fit yet.

How many people can use it?

Members are unlimited and are priced per user, so the counter, the store, the workshop and your accountant can each have their own login with a role that limits what they see.

Can I move from Tally or a billing app?

Yes. Import your products from a CSV file with opening stock per godown, then enter each electrician's and contractor's opening balance on their customer record. Start on the first day of a month.
